Dry brushing for health, well-being, and beautiful skin. What can brush massage do?

Dry brushing is a skincare ritual that is becoming increasingly popular. And for good reason: the treatment is simple, quick to perform, and the reward is immediate. Right after brushing, you feel wonderfully refreshed, and your energy level goes from "another coffee, please!" to "I can conquer the world, now!"

Dry brushing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice

Dry brushing is not a new invention; it's perhaps the oldest wellness treatment in the world. Even in the over 5,000-year-old Indian healing tradition of Ayurveda, daily brushing, also called "gharsana," is one of the most important practices. The goal of dry brushing in Ayurveda is to move lymph fluid towards the heart. This is believed to guide stored toxins and metabolic waste to the liver and kidneys, ultimately eliminating them.

In the mid-19th century, the renowned naturopath Sebastian Kneipp popularized this simple practice in Germany. He recommended dry brushing especially during the cold season to strengthen the immune system and prevent flu-like infections.

Vigorous brushing promotes circulation

Dry brushing has numerous positive effects on the skin, health, and general well-being. Even during brushing, blood circulation is properly stimulated. A pleasant tingling sensation spreads throughout the body — almost like after a short workout.

Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system

At the same time, the lymphatic system is strongly stimulated by the steady brushing towards the heart. Our lymphatic system acts as the body's "detox agent," diligently eliminating toxins. If it doesn't function properly, fluid accumulation can occur under the skin, leading to what is known as lymphedema.

Lymphatic drainage against cellulite

Regular dry brushing acts like a gentle lymphatic drainage and can help blocked lymph flow freely again. By stimulating the lymphatic system, it may also be possible to alleviate existing cellulite somewhat: if one brushes daily, the connective tissue often appears a little firmer and tighter after a few weeks.

The positive effect of lymphatic drainage on cellulite is even scientifically proven: A 2009 study with 60 women showed that cellulite can be reduced by both simple massage and manual lymphatic drainage.

However, one should not expect too many miracles from brush massage, as unfortunately, especially severe cellulite cannot simply be brushed away.

Dry brushing as an effective full-body exfoliation

The strong natural bristles also act like a powerful exfoliant, gently but effectively ridding your body of old skin cells. The underlying skin can breathe again, and the production of new skin cells is stimulated; the skin becomes soft and supple, looking like new.

The brush massage releases new energy

Dry Brushing is ideal for morning grumps, as applied right after waking up, it releases new energy and helps to start the day easier (and all without a third espresso!). Once you've experienced the intense freshness kick from brushing, you won't want to miss it, we promise!

Just five minutes a day is enough

Just a few minutes of dry brush massage per day are enough for the treatment to unfold its positive effects. Five minutes is ideal, but even an express massage of two to three minutes can already bring beneficial effects. Experts agree that the best time for dry brushing is in the morning, as the treatment is stimulating and energizing. It's best to massage before showering, as then you can easily wash off the exfoliated skin cells.

Always start with light pressure

When you start dry brushing, you should begin your massage with very light pressure. If you feel you need "a little more," you can increase the pressure level at any time. After the massage, the skin may be slightly red, but it should not appear scratched, as this means you have pressed too hard. Over time, you will find out how much pressure achieves the best effect for you.

How to brush correctly – the precise dry brushing instructions

A simple rule of thumb for dry brushing is to always stroke towards your heart. If you follow this simple principle, you can hardly go wrong with your massage. You always start the massage on the parts of the body furthest from your heart. You can find a selection of high-quality dry brushes with natural bristles here.

Legs and buttocks

So, start at your right foot and brush with light, straight strokes (or alternatively with small, circular movements) over your lower leg and thigh all the way up to your buttocks. Immediately after, follow with your left foot and left leg.

Arms

Now it's your arms' turn. Start at the hand of your right arm and brush your right arm up to your shoulder. Then place the brush on your left hand and stroke upwards to your left shoulder.

Abdomen and back

Next, focus on your abdomen and back. It is important to brush the abdomen in a circular motion, following the path of the intestines, i.e., clockwise from your perspective. Start at the right side of the lower abdomen and stroke up to the ribs. From there, move horizontally to the left and then down again.

Finally, brush your back. To do this, place the brush over the sides of your back and brush in a circular motion as well.

Skin care

After the massage is the perfect time to apply a skincare product, as the active ingredients can now be optimally absorbed by the skin. Valuable plant oils are ideal, as they intensively nourish your skin and make it even more supple.

Which bristles are right for you?

There are three types of bristles: synthetic nylon bristles, natural animal hair bristles, and natural plant fiber bristles. Many experts recommend brushing with natural bristles, as they are particularly gentle on the skin.

The bristle strength is a matter of taste, but the bristles should not be too soft, so that the positive effect of brushing is not lost. It is best to start with a brush of medium bristle strength, such as ruhi's Dry Brush, and if necessary, slowly work your way up to a harder bristle, such as the Vegan Dry Brush.

If you brush regularly, it may be useful to purchase a second brush with slightly softer bristles for sensitive body areas such as the abdomen or décolleté. We recommend the Soft Dry Brush with extra-soft natural bristles for this purpose.

A very special variant is the copper brush, also known as a monastery brush or ion brush. It is equipped with wafer-thin copper wires and was used by monks and nuns in the Middle Ages to combat diseases and pain. The copper, when rubbed, generates negatively charged ions directly on your skin, which can rebalance your energy levels and ward off free radicals. The Ionic Dry Brush from ruhi is of particularly high quality, boosts your daily energy levels, and can even firm the skin with regular use.

How to properly care for your dry brush

Proper care of your brush is important, as natural materials are very sensitive. It is therefore sufficient to simply tap the brush briefly on a hard, flat surface after each use to free it from skin flakes. You can also wash your brush with water and mild soap if necessary. However, you should not do this more often than once a month, as more frequent washing can dry out the delicate natural bristles.

Always let the brush air dry with the bristles facing down so that water does not run into the wooden body. The brush should also not be dried near heat sources, such as a heater, as the wood could crack. Always store your brush in a dry place and never on the edge of the bathtub, as damp wood can mold.

Who is dry brushing suitable for?

The good news: dry brushing is not only incredibly simple and effective, but it's also suitable for almost everyone. Those who suffer from severe morning fatigue, swollen legs, or weak connective tissue can particularly benefit. However, the massage should only be applied to healthy skin. If you suffer from acute skin diseases or sunburn, you should avoid dry brushing.
