Dry Brushing Rituals

Dry Brushing: Dry Brushing for Face and Body

High-quality dry brushes made from natural bristles and copper for radiant skin, more energy, and a mindful self-care ritual

Dry brushing is an ancient Ayurvedic healing method that naturally revitalizes body and mind. Gentle brushing on dry skin effectively removes dead skin cells, stimulates circulation, and promotes lymphatic flow. The result: silky-soft, radiant skin and a noticeable energy boost. At ruhi, we combine this traditional dry brushing method with sustainably produced brushes made from natural bristles and regional beech wood. Each of our dry brushes is manufactured in a family-run workshop in Germany.

What is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing, also known as Gharsana in Ayurveda, is a brush massage performed on dry skin. This method has a tradition of over 5,000 years: In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, daily brushing is one of the most important applications to move lymphatic fluid towards the heart and eliminate stored toxins and metabolic waste via the liver and kidneys. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dry brushing is also valued for revitalizing body and mind. In Germany, naturopath Sebastian Kneipp popularized the practice in the mid-19th century, recommending it particularly in the cold season to strengthen the immune system and prevent flu-like infections.

The principle is simple: using a brush with natural bristles, the skin is brushed with gentle, even strokes towards the heart. This removes dead skin cells, stimulates blood circulation, and promotes lymphatic flow. The skin can breathe again, is optimally supplied with oxygen, and the production of new skin cells is stimulated. The effect is immediately noticeable: after just a few minutes, an invigorating tingling sensation spreads throughout the body, leaving you feeling more awake and energetic.

Benefits of Dry Brushing for Skin and Body

Regular dry brushing offers numerous benefits, some of which are immediately visible and noticeable:

  • Natural exfoliation: It gently and effectively removes dead skin cells, allowing the underlying skin to breathe again.
  • Promotes blood circulation and lymphatic flow: Brushing stimulates microcirculation and supports the natural removal of toxins and metabolic waste.
  • Firmer, smoother skin: Regular use can reduce the appearance of cellulite and visibly firm the skin. A scientific study with 60 participants showed that both massage and manual lymphatic drainage can reduce cellulite.
  • Strengthens the immune system: By stimulating the lymphatic system, the body's natural defenses are specifically supported.
  • Better absorption of skincare products: After brushing, pores are open, allowing serums or oils to penetrate deeper and unfold their full effect.
  • Natural energy boost: The invigorating massage awakens you and is the perfect start to the day.

Face Brushing: Dry Brushing for the Face

Dry brushing the face works on the same principle as dry brushing the body, extending its benefits to delicate facial skin. Gentle brush massage removes dead skin cells, stimulates lymphatic flow in the face, and reduces puffiness. Immediately after application, the skin appears rosy-fresh and plumper. With regular use over several weeks, fine lines appear softened, and the overall complexion is refined.

Our ruhi Facial Dry Brush was specially developed for facial skin. Its medium-soft bristles gently yet effectively exfoliate. The special ergonomic shape fits perfectly in the hand and effortlessly reaches all facial contours. For particularly sensitive facial skin, we also offer the Vegan Facial Dry Brush with extra-soft, plant-based cellulose bristles. [Discover Facial Dry Brush]

Copper Brushes (Ionic Dry Brush)

Our Ionic Dry Brushes take dry brushing to a new level. The ultra-fine copper bristles generate negatively charged ions (anions) when rubbed, which rebalance the skin's energy and neutralize free radicals. This technology is not a new invention: as early as the Middle Ages, monks and nuns used copper brushes (also known as monastery brushes) to combat fatigue and pain. Our Ionic Dry Brush is available for both the body and as an Ionic Facial Dry Brush for the face. [The Ionic Brush Set Face & Body].

Dry Brushing Instructions: How to Brush Correctly

The most important rule for dry brushing: always brush towards your heart. Start with the body parts furthest from the heart and work your way towards the center of the body with light, even strokes. Ideally, you should brush in the morning before showering on dry skin. Just three to five minutes a day are enough to achieve noticeable results.

Dry Brushing the Body

  1. Legs: Start at the feet and brush in long strokes up over the lower legs and thighs to the buttocks.
  2. Arms: Begin at the back of the hand and brush up to the shoulders.
  3. Abdomen and back: Brush the abdomen in circular motions clockwise (following the path of the intestines) and the back via the sides.

Finishing: Shower to rinse off skin flakes, then apply your favorite body oil to still slightly damp skin.

Dry Brushing the Face

  1. Neck: Start at the base of the neck and brush gently upwards towards the chin.
  2. Cheeks and chin: Brush from the chin upwards towards the hairline, then from the nose and mouth to the ears.
  3. Eye area: Brush very gently in circular motions around the eyes and eyebrows.
  4. Forehead: Brush horizontally from the center of the forehead to the temples.
  5. Finishing: Now apply a serum or facial oil. The skin absorbs active ingredients particularly well after brushing. [Adaptogen Vitamin C Oil Serum]

Quality and Sustainability of Our Dry Brushes

All our brushes are manufactured in a family-run factory in Germany that is both FSC and EMAS certified (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). The beech wood comes from regional, responsibly managed forests. Our natural bristles are of ethically sound origin, and for the vegan variants, we use an innovative, plastic-free cellulose bristle made from wood or plant-based sisal fibers.

We also prioritize sustainability in packaging: 100% recyclable, FSC-certified packaging, printed with environmentally friendly inks. Our dry brushes are completely plastic-free and designed for longevity. Because we believe: a good ritual deserves a tool that is manufactured with as much care as the ritual itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you dry brush?

Daily application is ideal, preferably in the morning before showering. Even three to five minutes a day can yield noticeable results. Those just starting with dry brushing can begin with two to three applications per week and gradually increase the frequency.

Is dry brushing suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, if you use the right brush. Our Soft Dry Brush with extra-soft natural bristles was specially developed for sensitive areas of the body. For the face, we recommend the Vegan Facial Dry Brush with particularly gentle cellulose bristles. As a general rule: when dry brushing, no or only very light pressure should be applied.

What is the difference between a regular dry brush and a copper brush?

A classic dry brush with natural bristles exfoliates the skin, promotes blood circulation, and stimulates lymphatic flow. Our copper brush (Ionic Dry Brush) additionally offers an ionizing effect: The fine copper wires generate negatively charged ions when rubbed, which neutralize free radicals, balance the skin's energy levels, and provide a particularly intense burst of freshness. This tradition dates back to medieval monastic brushes.

Can you dry brush your face?

Yes. Facial dry brushing is based on the same principle as body dry brushing and offers numerous benefits: it refines the complexion, stimulates cell renewal, alleviates fine lines, and reduces puffiness. It's important to use a special facial brush with softer bristles, such as our Facial Dry Brush, which was specifically developed for delicate facial skin. [View Facial Dry Brush]

How do I clean my dry brush?

Tap the brush on a hard, flat surface after each use to remove loose skin flakes. The brush should not be cleaned with water, as the delicate natural materials could be damaged. Store it in a dry place and do not place it near heat sources, as the wood could crack. For hygienic reasons, we recommend replacing the brush after approximately one to two years.

What aftercare after dry brushing?

After body brushing, we recommend showering to rinse off dead skin cells, followed by a nourishing body oil. After dry brushing your face, it's the perfect time for a serum or face oil, as the skin absorbs active ingredients particularly well after brushing.

Does dry brushing help with cellulite?

Regular dry brushing can reduce the appearance of cellulite by stimulating circulation, promoting lymphatic flow, and firming the skin. It's not a miracle cure, but as part of a conscious body care routine, it can bring visible improvements.

Who is dry brushing suitable for and when should you avoid it?

Dry brushing is suitable for almost everyone and is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from morning fatigue, swollen legs, or weak connective tissue. However, the massage should only be performed on healthy skin. You should refrain from dry brushing if you have acute skin conditions, open wounds, sunburn, or severely inflamed skin. The Ionic Dry Brush is not suitable if you have a copper or tin allergy.
